_____ It is affected by ____

Difficulties with engagement.
Young people ( teenagers ) - don’t want to be seem to be making mistakes, don’t want to get dirty

Old People from deprived neighborhoods - culturally not used to going to galleries or museums

Cultural factors and settings.

Demographics of participants - cultural reference points, available time, cultural value of the arts.

Culturally how participants see ‘the arts and creativity’ - from a culture where artists are seem working in the market as artisans and as a permanent and accessible part of the community - or a culture where artists are seen as working in an elite and inaccessible class/social group.

Power relationships - who feels they are in charge - who is happy to let go of control - who is happy to be led, who would prefer to be left to work on their own

Historical cultural traditions in art - how are artists and creatives perceived in that setting, in that city, in that country.

Western perception of artists = white, male, rich and dead!

Language and Symbols - visual symbols in art can translate differently in different cultural settings.

Visual literacy - participants ability to make sense of information in the form if pictures or sculptures - a skill that needs to be learnt - a skill often acquired in groups; group crits a uni, talking about a painting with friends and trying to work out the narrative, articulating your reaction to a work of art or to a complicated scene in a film.

Art works, creative activity, artistic practice even teaching in a way that does not fit the ‘norm’ can be perceived differently at particular cultural moments, or negatively by particular political groups or governments.

The institution, school, social group it happens within

Will others allow, accept and value it?

Time - continuous cyclical learning vs deadlines, units and exams

The participants family and peers + their experience of creative learning - “Why are they poncing about dressing as romans - they should be learning the Kings of England ”

National education culture and practice - some European countries whole education systems are based on learning through rote - remembering facts and regurgitating them - were does creative learning fit here?

Ma Fine art course in Japan = copying works by the great masters.

Ma Fine art course in London = interdisciplinary work and critical theory.

The climate! - Malmo City museum, Sweden, amazing open learning experiences - participants spend long periods of time in the galleries learning space because its warm and free and because its freezing outside.

The weather - what if it rains - be reactive to your environment….

“Adult on their own in a playground” - how we perceive adults who want to play and be creative. Could a man in his mid-twenties go and play on an adventure playground? Would a businessman feel comfortable learning through mistakes during a clowning workshop?
